Mental Illness Support

Talking about mental illness always seems like a taboo subject. I’m currently dealing with this in my family and it’s difficult for everyone but we are handling it as best as we can. It definitely keeps life interesting.

For those who suffer from mental illness or know someone who has a mental health condition, please know that you are not alone. The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a wonderful organization to find out more about mental illness and to get the support you need. I don’t know too many people but have already recommended this organization to family and friends.

Just like Mayim Bialik from The Big Bang Theory, I’m hoping that by talking about it, you or your loved one can get the help you need sooner than later. There are 1 in 5 Americans who live with a mental health condition. It’s not as uncommon as you may think.

If you are living in the United States, find your local NAMI in your state. I’ve attended the NAMI Basics class which helped me discuss the issues I was facing with other parents and caregivers who were in similar situations. I also was able to find a local support group through this class. NAMI has several educational classes that you can attend. Find the right class that fits your needs.

Even if you think that you don’t need help, just check NAMI out and give it a chance. It definitely helped change my outlook on mental illness.

    Hey Jen, First of all, I just subscribed because I really like the content of your blog! I just started a blog as well and would love it if you just stop by and check it out: mommycharlotte.org! 2nd- mental illness is a dear subject to me as well that is why I have entered the mental health field and worked both, inpatient and outpatient --NAMI is a great resources!       Hi Charlotte, Thank you for subscribing. I'm glad you are enjoying the content of the blog. To be honest, I haven't been able to spend enough time on my blog because of life--higher priority items that need my attention. I'm hoping in a month or two things will get better so that I can start posting again. In the meantime please have patience with me. I'm glad that you work in the mental health field. I constantly struggle with my daughter on a daily basis and work with her current state. I try to have patience although it can be very tiresome as well. I'll check out your blog.
